SMT Contract Assembly
We can offer contract SMT assembly, with kitted supply preferred. Our turnaround for SMT assembly is 1 - 2 wks upon receipt of PCB file, stencil, BOM and kit of parts.
Our Price Rates 2008 (ex GST):
Initial CAD programming: $160.00*
Machine setup (per unique part): $2.00 ea
PCB load: $4.00 per PCB/panel
Component Cost of Placement: $0.05 ea
(*Initial customer order includes CAD programming at zero cost)
Example quote for a PCB with 100 SMT components, and 10 unique types of SMT components
-> Setup = $180 ($20 for first order), Placment cost per pcb = $4 + (100 x $0.05) = $9 per PCB
Our SMT pick and place machine is a Mydata machine which is the worldwide industry leader for flexibility. It has the latest control software (v2.5), with the latest feeders (Agilis).
This combination ensures the machine delivers outstanding performance, and quick turnarounds.
Can you do lead-free?
Our machine and oven is capable of lead-free production, but unless you specifically require lead-free for export markets, then standard lead-tin solder will provide greater reliability and lower costs.
What we require from you (in order of need, most urgent is first):
i) PCB file preferably in Protel format. We generate the machine placement data from the PCB file. Placement accuracy is better than 0.1mm, so CAD data is a must, especially for fine pitch devices.
ii) Bill of Materials, preferably in Excel or PDF format. Protel includes BOM information in the Protel file, but often the design may be changed slightly since the Protel CAD was originally produced. The BOM is a Master document,
as if there is any descrepancies, the Master BOM is the authoritive document. The Master BOM should also show any parts which are not required to be fitted.
iii) Kit of parts in reels, tubes, or trays. Our machine needs at least 50mm of feeder tape to enable the tape to be fed in to the machine. Parts can be supplied on a cut strip, but please allow the loss of at least 12 parts if the first 50mm is not empty.
iv) Bare PCBs or PCB's in panel. Our machine uses board edge holders with no need for special mounting holes etc. If possible, a 2mm clearance around the edge of the board is required for the holders, but the holders can also grip the corners if the board is tightly packed.
The optinum minimum size for SMT placement on a PCB is 140-160 parts. Try to panelise small PCB's in to a larger panel so that this optimum figure can be reached. Do not try to create excessively large panels of small boards as they become
difficult to handle, and prone to breaking apart. The maximum number of SMT parts on a single PCB is unlimited, and our machine can handle pcbs up to 300x450mm. If you are in any doubt about panelising, then please contact us (we don't bite).
For best accuracy, we do require visual fiducial marks on each PCB (a minimum of 2). You can download our recommended guidlines for fiducial information here.
iv) Solder Paste Stencil We recommend Mastercut Tecnhnologies S/S stencils, and most customers supply the stencil with their kit of parts. We can assist with stencil preparation at no charge, and we can also arrange to supply a stencil via Mastercut Technologies with a 10% handling premium.
Mastercut are a local manufacturer with guaranteed turnarounds of 5 working days or less. Other stencil suppliers will often sub-contract the stencil manufacture to overseas with greater turnarounds, and no recourse if any problems occur.
What if I have an urgent assembly job?
Urgent jobs can be started same day if the need arises. A significant part of an SMT Assembly job is the initial machine programming. The sooner we have your PCB CAD data, the sooner the machine can be programmed to run boards.
The next step is to program the machine with component mechanical dimensions. The machine does this automatically via a transducer on mechanical jaws, or camera vision equipment on the machine. For standard packages, this information is already programmed in to the machine, but for unusual IC's etc, then this an extra step.
Once a part is programmed in to the machine, it never needs to be repeated. We do not charge for this process since it will be cost prohibitive for small quantity setups and prototype runs. We want to minimise the costs associated with prototypes so that your future designs become commercial reality.
We do not charge extra fees for urgent jobs, but we do request COD payment in return of the favour.

Design Services Available

We have design experience in the following areas:
Electronics Hardware Design (Analogue and Digital)
Embedded Micro-Controller Applications
PCB layout by Certified Interconnect Designer

Products

In the first 6 years of our operation, we have completed a
number of electronics hardware design projects, for our clients, and also our own Tracktronics product range.
Our current products include:
RS232 LED Monitor
This is a very simple board with a number of Yellow and Red LEDs displaying
the current status of the RS232 lines. A Red LED lit means the line is asserted,
a Yellow LED lit means the line is idle, and no LEDs lit means the line is open-circuit
(not actively driven). Both DB9, DB25 and RJ45 versions of this product are available.
Fibre Optic Modem Set - RS232 / RS485 Interface

This modem set consists of up to 4 fibre-optic modem ports, which can be configured
via a DIP switch to multi-drop commuincations along a line of inter-connected modem sets.
Both RS232 and RS422/485 communications signals are available from each modem, and the
full set of RS232 lines commonly used (ie. TXD/RXD/RTS/CTS/DTR/DCD) are available.
The maximum baud rate limit is 19200bps. Power supply options include +12VDC, +24VDC, 48VDC,
and 110VAC / 240VAC. Each modem port is galvanically isolated from each other, and
also from the power supply input.

Fibre Optic Modem Set with PSTN / Fibre Modem Diversity capabilities

The FOMS DLC is based on the Fibre Optic Modem Set detailed above, but has the
added feature of being able to detect a break in the fibre between any 2 units within
the Fibre-Optic chain and then independently activate a diversity communications link
to re-divert communications around the break. The diveristy link can be either a direct
RS232 connection, a set of RS232-based modems, a set of PSTN modems using Hayes AT commands,
or a set of Fibre Optic modems. As per the standard FOMS units, all common DC and AC supply voltages
are supported, and both RS232 and RS422/RS485 signals are available.

ePatch Panel

'ePatch Panel' denotes as 'Electronic Patch Panel' was designed to be used
as a easily-configurable RS232 or RS422/RS485 electronic patch panel. Each
unit has 16 ports, and up to 4 units can be connected together to provide up to
64 ports. Both the RS232 and RS422/485 types of units can be connected together via
the extension ribbon cables provided with each unit.
The units can be configured to electronically switch any of the serial ports in
either a simple point-to-point or multi-drop configuration. For eg. Port 9 could be configured
to connect straight to Port 10, and Ports 1, 2, 3 and 6 may be connected in a multi-drop configuration.
Programming of the configuration is performed via an RS232 port using simple ASCII text commands.
eg. the command 'CONP1=P2' means that P1 is to be connected to P2, and P2 to be connected to P1.
The configuration can then be programmed to be stored in the units non-volatile memory so that
no further user configuration is required. Both DC and AC supply options are available, and each
unit occupies a 1RU 19" rack space.

ePatch32

'ePatch32' denotes as 'Electronic Patch Panel 32 port' and was designed to be used
as a easily-configurable RS232 or RS422/RS485 electronic patch panel. Each
unit has 32 ports, and up to 4 units can be connected together to provide up to
128 ports. Both the RS232 and RS422/485 types of units can be connected together via
extension ribbon cables provided with each unit.
The units can be configured to electronically switch any of the serial ports in
either a simple point-to-point or multi-drop configuration. For eg. Port 9 could be configured
to connect straight to Port 10, and Ports 1, 2, 3 and 6 may be connected in a multi-drop configuration.

Intelligent A/B Arbitrator

The Intelligent Arbitrator monitors two sets of electronics equipment which
is configured in a dual-redundant set-up, and controls a set of relays to switch
one of the sets of equipment as being 'online'. Arbitration begins with monitoring
a healthy signal from each equipment set. If one set of equipment is 'healthy' and the
other is not, then the healthy equipnment is switched online. The healthy signal can be
either a constant state signal, or a signal toggling on / off at a specific rate. The
Arbitrator can be configured to accept either a constant state signal or accept a range of
input frequencies before a unit is deemed healthy. A front panel toggle switch allows
the user to over-ride the automatic control and manually select the equipment set to be online.
Once an equipment set is deemed to be online, the Arbitrator controls a number of relays contained
within the unit to switch up to 32 lines of signals from one equipment set to the other.
All switching events are recorded in a non-volatile event log which can be downloaded to a computer
and examined. Both DC and AC supply options are available, and each
unit occupies a 1RU 19" rack space.
